CALVES- 87 Forward

Good entry of calves today with a large show of younger calves.

Trade was very strong indeed with trade for younger end and black and white calves been very good. Topping the days trade was a smart British Blue bull calf making £800 from JP & C Robson, Preston. Aberdeen Angus calves remain good to sell with calves topping out at £760 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale and an overall average of £617.50. Hereford calves were also in demand with trade maxing out at £750 from Raby Farms, Preesall. Black and white calves were good to sell with some smart Friesian types available, average for these was £333 with a top price of £480 from Raby Farms, Preesall. Coming very close behind was Eddie Newsham at £460, with a very strong run to follow this.
Stirks were good to sell with a smaller entry on the week and an overall average of £1080. Topping this category was a strong Aberdeen Angus heifer making £1160 from AT Burrow & Son. The same firm dominated this section with more Aberdeen Angus at £1150 x2, £990 x3 and a Limousin heifer at £1150.

STORE CATTLE

Lancasters weekly store cattle sale saw trade sharper on the week with some cattle easily up £60-£80 with good runs of evenly bunched cattle selling to a premium.

Steers today averaged £2067 and heifers averaging £1875 for the 125 sold with the men who missed coming with entered cattle feeling they had missed a flying trade. Cowell & Moore, Woodplumpton today top of the shop with 4 well meated South Devons selling to £2500. Aberdeen Angus steers to £2380 from L Parsons & Sons, Levens with other Aberdeen Angus steers to £2300 from M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling and AT Burrow & Son, Lancaster. British Blue steers to £2350 from JD & GM Bracken, Garstang. A pen full of 4 Herefords steers to £2250 from A & E Clarkson, Thurnham. Limousin steers to £2280 from J & A Heap & Sons, Garstang. Charolais steers to £2200 from EW & RM Towers, Lancaster. Heifers up a gear as well this week with JD & GM Bracken, Garstang to £2280 for British Blues. Other British Blues to £2220 this time from AT Burrow & Son, Lancaster. Hereford heifers to £2100 for a trio from J & S Winstanley, Preston, other Hereford heifers to £2000 this time from JP & L Eccleston, Grimsargh. Aberdeen Angus heifers to £2080 from L Parsons & Sons, Levens.

Lancaster weekly otm sale saw numbers yet again well short of buyer’s requirements as 3 times the number could have easily been sold today. Few more beef bred otms about today with A Dixon & Son, Kendal to £2541.00 for Stabiliser, others from the same good home at £2104. Hereford otm cows to £1985.69 or 299.5ppk from N Barker, Kendal while Aberdeen Angus from the same home at £1967.35 or 269.5ppk. Friesian cows to £1922.92 or 264.5ppk from K & DE Woodhouse, Ellel. Other Friesian cows from Cote Farm Partnership, Nether Kellet to £1726.80 or 240ppk. OTM cows today averaged 242ppk. Cast steers today average 328ppk, topping at £2505 or 324ppk from Cowell & Moore, Woodplumpton with a South Devon who also had Aberdeen Angus cast steers to £2488 or 334.5ppk. OTM heifers today averaging a pleasing 306ppk, topping at 369.5ppk or £2364 for a Limousin from EJ Ward & Sons, Carnforth with other Limousin from the same good home at 364.5ppk. Friesian otm heifers to £2222.29 or 300ppk from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Other Friesian otm heifers to £2139.43 or 289.5ppk from GA & A Atkinson, Cantsfield.
